Federal Government Increases the Transportation Fringe Benefit to $230/month

The City of San Francisco applauds President Obama and Congress' decision to increase the monthly pre-tax deduction for transit/vanpool expenses under transportation fringe benefits (IRS code 132f) from $120 to $230, effective February 17, 2009. The increased maximum brings greater financial incentive to take public transportation to and from work.

San Francisco's Commuter Benefits Ordinance requires all employers with 20 or more employees to offer transportation benefits to their employees, either as a pre-tax deduction for transit/vanpool, as an employer paid subsidy, or as a free shuttle service. Businesses offering a pre-tax deduction for transit/vanpool should increase their allowable amount to $230 for the next deduction. The change could save commuters with the longest and most costly commutes more than $1000 per year on average in tax savings.

For questions or concerns about Commuter Benefits, please contact the San Francisco Department of the Environment at (415) 355-3727 or commuterbenefits@sfgov.org.
